Scoliosis

Scoliosis

When looking at a side-view of the spine, we expect to see curves. These curves develop as a child progresses from crawling to walking and are important for balance, protection, mobility and shock absorption. When looking at a “normal” spine from front to back we do NOT expect to see curves. This abnormal curvature is called scoliosis. If it becomes severe and untreated it may lead to future health and cosmetic concerns. Scoliosis is more common in girls than in boys. Its onset can usually be detected in late childhood and it develops throughout puberty. Early detection is important because most treatment options focus on stopping the progression of scoliosis rather than correcting it. Diagnosis of scoliosis is made with thoracic x-rays and its severity is based on measured degrees of curvature. Mild scoliotic type curves in the developing spine are not unusual and these need only to be monitored. After a structural analysis, treatment for more moderate and severe scoliosis can range from spinal correction from your chiropractor, exercise programs, structural correction with bracing and, in severe cases, surgical correction.
